My book club just finished up this #1 New York Times Bestseller. It didn’t get great reviews from the members, but I found it very interesting and socially relevant with all that is happening with the #metoo movement and the calling out of predators in politics and the movie industry. One of the criticisms from the group was the style in which the author presented the characters, but I found that to be a key factor in illustrating the different personal views each character had of the crimes and how their personal motives influenced the outcome of the situation. I especially like how the author very skillfully calls out both women and men as perpetrators in the revictimization of female victims of violence. This was definitely a good book club choice with many facets to discuss including social context, character development and relationships, and tons of symbolism. Also, a decent suspenseful plot for anyone just reading for something in this genre.
